Food Allergy Symptoms Can Help The Diagnostic Process

A food allergy can manifest itself with many different symptoms depending on what particular substance the body is reacting to and how severe the reaction is.

The signs and symptoms are produced by the body’s immune system reacting to a protein contained in the food.  The body wrongly considers the substance as being something bad and tries to eliminate it.

Many of the more noticeable reactions occur in the skin.  Probably the most common of the skin reactions is a rash.

While some of the rashes can be very uncomfortable, the good news is that they are one of the more moderate food allergy symptoms.  The milder the reaction, the easier it generally is to determine the source of the problem.

When the reactions are not too serious or painful, you can try using a process of elimination  to find the cause. You start by eating a normal diet except for cutting out one food.  If the symptoms go away, you just need to remove that food from your diet.  This can be a long process so it isn’t recommended in cases where the allergic reaction is severe.

Useful clues can be found by doing an allergy blood tests. These are often used in cases where the allergic reaction is more serious. The blood tests are used to see what the body has produced in its effort to remove what it thinks to be a toxin and which is the cause of the symptoms.  Knowing how the body reacts and what the body is producing to cause this can help a doctor to make a proper diagnosis.

In the case of more serious food allergy symptoms, it is important to identify the food substance as quickly as possible. Allergy blood tests are a good method in such cases not only because they are faster.  They also produce more accurate results as there is more of the substance the body wrongly produced in its effort to eliminate what it thought was harmful.

One very common symptom of a food allergy is hives. They can be difficult to treat and can last for long periods of time. While it is good to start testing for food allergies when hives suddenly appear, you should know that there are other possible causes for the condition. A reaction to the clothes you wear can cause hives as can certain infections.  Even stress has been known to cause a case of hives to appear suddenly.

Some food allergy symptoms can not only be painful, they can be life threatening.  The greatest threat to life from a food allergy comes in the form of breathing difficulties. If you see someone having difficulties breathing, and you know they have a food allergy, get medical help immediately.

If you suffer from a food allergy or you are with someone who you know has one, you should be alert for any signs or symptoms at all times.  Food products are not always labeled correctly. Eating out can present its own set of problems.

You may need to ask what is in certain dishes or how they are prepared. For instance, if you are allergic to peanuts, you need to make sure there are no nuts in the food and that peanut oil wasn’t used in preparing any of the foods.

Food allergy symptoms can be very minor but irritating, such as a small rash.  Swelling or difficulty swallowing my not be life threatening, but they can be very distressing.

Other symptoms can be extremely uncomfortable and make it difficult to function as normal. Identifying the symptoms is the first step toward finding the cause and treating it.

The easiest treatment for food allergies is to avoid the food causing the problem, but that isn’t always possible. The most common medical treatment involves the use of hormones.

The body produces these same hormones naturally, but because of the faulty signals produced in an allergic reaction, it may not produce the correct hormone or enough of it. Adrenaline is a hormone that is often used for a quick, short term treatment of a serious allergic reaction.

The most controversial means for treating food allergy symptoms is acupuncture and accupressure.  These forms of traditional Chinese medicine are used to restore the proper energy fields in our bodies.

While practitioners of this form of treatment believe all life forms have these energy fields, Western medical science has yet to prove the fields exist are remains skeptical. While more research may be needed to convince its detractors, it might still be worth researching to see if it is a treatment option you would want to pursue.

Many things can produce symptoms that can be mistaken for a food allergy. Conversely, sometimes a symptom is attributed to something else when it is actually a reaction to a food.

When you notice a condition you suspect is an allergic reaction, it is best to seek professional medical advise to see if it may indeed be a food allergy symptom.
